The MI Beyond Foundations mini courses are designed for learners who want to deepen their MI knowledge, skills, strategies. Each mini course focuses on one concept and is designed with practical application in mind.   In MI, discrepancy is when a person’s behaviour doesn’t match with their values or goals. Or, their current state doesn’t match their desired state. This mini course explores the concept of discrepancy and strategies for developing a sense of discrepancy when a person doesn't see the conflict between their behaviours and values or goals.    Time commitment: 30-60 minutes self-paced online content, followed by a 30 min 1:1 practice and feedback session. You will have 30 days from enrollment to complete the course. This course offers a brief introduction to the common principles of trauma-informed care (TIC), cultural safety (CS), person- and family-centred care (PFCC), and motivational interviewing (MI). We estimate that the course takes 2-3 hours to complete, including practice and application activities. You will have access to the course for 60 days from enrollment.    You may choose to work through this course on your own or with a partner or a group. Having a partner or a group can be helpful for generating feedback and ideas for how to apply what you are learning to your specific situation. It will also give you an opportunity to practice new things before you try them out in real life.    Note: This course is focused on common principles of these approaches. Aside from providing brief definitions of each approach, this course does not provide in-depth training in any approach. Links to additional resources are provided for those who want to learn more.    Prerequisites: None. An introductory knowledge of TIC, CS, PFCC, and MI is helpful, but not required.    Please note that this course is in beta testing. As a beta tester, you would be one of the first people (outside of the development team) to take this course. Any feedback you have to offer will be taken under consideration for revisions before the course is marketed to a broader audience.  Read more

Brief Action Planning is a self-management support approach to help people make action plans to address the aspects of their health or situation that are most important to them. It is practical and highly structured, and involves using an algorithm to guide someone step-by-step through deciding whether they want to make a plan, developing a SMART plan, assessing their confidence, problem-solving if necessary, and planning their follow-up. Each step of the process is carefully considered and is based on the literature and evolving understanding of what works and doesn’t work to help people change. Brief Action Planning Certification Brief Action Planning (BAP) Certification is a standardized exam for assessing skill competence and fidelity in BAP. The exam is a recorded zoom teleconference session with a standardized patient, who is trained to give you opportunities to demonstrate the full range of questions and skills in Brief Action Planning. The session takes up to 20 minutes (though the interaction itself should take less than 10). Afterwards, the recording is assessed using a standardized scoring tool and successful candidates are awarded a Brief Action Planning certificate.  This handout contains some helpful tips to prepare for certification.  Pre-requisite: Prior training in Brief Action Planning For more information, contact eLearning@centrecmi.ca Read more
